Bloomberg: Apple Jabbed Over Lack of Board Diversity

Bloomberg: Apple Jabbed Over Lack of Board Diversity

Criticisms surrounding Apple's recent perceived lack of product innovation are taking a backseat today to resounding jabs directed toward the diversity - or lack thereof - on Apple's board of directors.

Specifically, shareholders are said to be applying ample pressure on Apple to bulk up its board with more female directors and executives.

These barbs come following the recent addition of language to Apple's corporate charter vowing to diversify its board. But shareholders are ready for less talk and more action.

“There is a general problem with diversity at the highest echelon of Apple,” said Jonas Kron, director of shareholder advocacy at Trillium. “It’s all white men.”

The issue regarding poor diversity is far from unique to Apple, however. Only 17 percent of board seats on Fortune 500 companies and 15 percent of executive officer positions were held by women in 2013, the same report confirms.

Today, Andrea Jung, the former CEO of Avon Products Inc., is the only woman and person of color on Apple’s board of directors.
